How to calm sensitive skin

A rough texture, dry feel, and tendency to redness and irritations. Sensitive skin can react in various ways, which is why this skin type calls for extra care and attention to ingredient lists. There's no one-size-fits-all routine for sensitive skin – different reactive patterns can crave different remedies. If you have sensitive skin, your first priority should always be to figure out what causes your skin's reaction.

Different types of sensitive skin

While some experience their skin's sensitivity as a more or less permanent condition, other people's reactions occur more occasionally – triggered by seasonal conditions such as excessively hot or cold weather, or the change from one to another. Other sensitive skin types only react when in contact with certain ingredients – better known as allergic reactions. As sensitive skin is often a symptom of another skin condition such as acne, rosacea, or atopic dermatitis, we always recommend that you consult a dermatologist if you're bothered by your sensitive skin.

What can cause sensitive skin?

Numerous factors can set off a reaction in sensitive skin. Whereas some skin especially reacts to extraneous factors such as UV exposure and harsh climate, others' symptoms are triggered by genetics, diet, or ingredients in cosmetics or skincare. The best you can do is to treat the concern from its core by figuring out what triggers it.

Essential ingredients for sensitive skin

When it comes to treating sensitive skin, mild and soothing ingredients should dominate your products' ingredient lists. Whether your sensitive skin is affected by internal or extraneous factors, calming and protecting ingredients are always beneficial, because they'll help keep your skin's barrier healthy and strong to prevent future reactions. Some of our favorites are aloe vera, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide.

A routine for sensitive skin

Step 1: Cleanser

A product that belongs in every routine regardless of skin type. If you have sensitive skin, opt for a gentle cleanser with natural cleansing actives – our Daily Foaming Cleanser will keep the skin clean and nourished without removing its necessary oils.

Step 2: Serum

For sensitive skin types, a serum formulated to effectively treat and soothe sensitive and damaged skin is recommended. Our Intense Hydra Serum, which strengthens the skin's moisture barrier, is a great fit for this step.

Step 3: Strengthen with Niacinamide Lifting Mist

Our Niacinamide Lifting Mist with soothing aloe vera helps reduce inflammations and redness, while 5% niacinamide works to strengthen the skin's barrier, leaving it stronger and the skin's health optimized overall. Use it in your everyday rituals or whenever your skin is in need of an extra boost. Note: The formula contains natural fragrance, so if your skin is prone to reacting sensitively to this, it's completely fine to leave it out.

Step 4: Moisturizer

Our Daily Hydra Cream Sensitive is formulated with sensitive skin types in mind and enriched with natural hyaluronic acid, which indulges the skin with an intense dose of hydration to soothe irritations and leave a silky-soft touch. Mixed with actibiome that minimizes redness and promotes a healthy pH-balance, this product is the ideal choice for reactive skin.

Step 5: SPF

Always finish your routine with a layer of SPF – regardless of your skin type, we recommend our Facial Sunscreen SPF50. This keeps your skin protected while helping prevent damage and premature signs of aging.
