People & Rituals: Maria Palm

Maria Palm has had her own yoga practice since she was 14 — today she teaches others in the very space that has meant so much to her. We talked to Maria about yoga, about creating small moments of calm in a busy everyday life, about wellbeing in practice — and about thewoods_favorites she always comes back to.

How did your journey with yoga begin, and why did you start teaching?

I’ve had my own yoga practice since I was 14, so for almost 20 years now. I’ve always practiced just for myself, never really shared much about it or talked to people about it. It was my ritual—a space I used and still use to completely switch off. A little break from my mind and from everything life asks of us.

Over the past few years, I began going deeper and becoming more dedicated to my practice. I noticed that people around me were becoming interested in it and in the effect it has. It felt like a very natural time to take the leap and get certified.

I didn’t take my first 200-hour YTT with the intention of becoming a teacher, but simply for myself to gain a deeper understanding and connection. But I quickly felt that I had landed in the right place, somewhere that truly made sense to me.

That’s why I teach: to share my experience and to create a space for people—a space that has such great meaning and importance to me. Being able to give that to others is the greatest gift.

How do you create small moments of calm in a busy everyday life?

The philosophy behind yoga is to create a “quiet mind”—presence and awareness. It’s something I carry with me into everyday life. Even when my thoughts are racing, when I’m watching TV or looking at my phone, I’m aware of it, which makes it easier to return to the present moment.

I love observing, looking at my surroundings, being present, and enjoying all the small, beautiful moments that make up life.

Which woods_ favorites do you always come back to—and why?

Vitamin Face Oil & Sculpting Face Gua Sha — a staple part of my morning routine, and a little ritual I love starting my day with.

Cleansing Balm, Deep Cleansing Scrub & Deep Cleansing Mask — a great 1-2-3 step routine that leaves my skin feeling so soft and relaxed.

What’s your best advice for more everyday wellbeing?

Care—and listening to yourself and to others. Honour your needs and live in your truth. It’s okay to say no or cancel plans if that’s what you need. And, conversely, to go out and do something nice or fun when you feel like it.

I believe in the concept of karma—cause and effect. When you act from an honest and loving place, you will receive that energy back.

More personally and concretely, everyday wellbeing can look like prioritising yoga, a workout or a sound bath, depending on what you need. Something as simple as going for a walk, with or without(!) music in your ears. Booking myself a massage or treatment, or taking a bath with my favourite products and candles.

Small things like scented oil in a diffuser, my favourite dessert treat after dinner, or a really good cup of tea in my favourite mug (self-imported from Japan!). These are the little moments that awaken the senses, bring me into the present, and create joy in everyday life.

What can you always find in your bag when you head out?

As a true Cancer, I always carry a little bit of everything, but there are a few essentials you’ll always find in my bag: a good lip balm, face oil, lip liner, roll-on oil perfume, my iPhone, keys, AirPods, a cute accessory to spice up my outfit and a little snack. Always prepared—it’s not cute to be hangry.

Do you have a local spot in your neighbourhood that you always return to when you’re looking for calm or inspiration?

I love going for walks on the old ramparts, or along the water and canals. Looking at nature, water and people is the best inspiration and medicine for me.

And if I really need a mental break, I take a yoga class at Christianshavns Torv at The Yoga Flat.
