What is oily skin?

Everybody’s skin produces oil, also known as sebum. It’s perfectly natural and actual a vital process of keeping our skin smooth, hydrated, and youthful. However, what’s different for oily skin types is that these sebaceous glands stimulate an overproduction of oil, creating that shiny feel and touch. With the constant overproduction of oil, your skin will also be more likely to break out, as the excess oil and build-up of dead skin cells and grime can clog up pores. Common symptoms of oily skin include the mentioned shiny appearance, enlarged pores, and a tendency to form persistent blemishes – a good way to determine if you have oily skin is to take a look at your skin hours before and after cleansing on a regular day. If your skin looks or feels greasy not long after a cleanse, and you can dab off oil on a piece of paper, you probably have oily skin.

What can worsen oily skin?

The climate can have an essential impact on your skin’s condition, as hot and humid weather can leave it visibly oilier. A poor diet is another factor known to affect it, but a not-so-known factor that can speed up the skin’s oil production is actually skipping your moisturizer. Seems ironic, right? But despite many people’s beliefs, moisture is necessary for every skin type, and depriving your skin of it will only make it compensate by producing even more oil – kind of counterproductive, if you ask us. In addition to his, over-cleansing or exfoliating can have the same effects, as you’ll be constantly removing your skin’s natural oils, thereby defeating the purpose.

How to treat oily skin

When we said not to skip the moisturizer, we meant it. It’s essential that you keep your skin’s moisture balance intact or you can risk damaging your skin barrier and worsening the issue. Therefore, yes, a moisturizer always belongs in your routine, even for oily skin. However, oily skin types can benefit from choosing a lightweight, water-based gel that’ll provide the necessary hydration while leaving a matte surface. Also, we recommend you opt for a water-based cleanser for your AM and PM routine that won’t strip your skin but still rinse build-up, sweat, and grime. A weekly mask can also be sufficient to make sure your skin is cleansed and pores are unclogged from deep within.

Go-to ingredient for oily skin

Look for salicylic acid/BHA on the ingredient list of your product if your wish is to defeat persistent impurities and clogged pores. Derived from natural willow bark, salicylic acid is an effective exfoliant that removes dead skin cells while penetrating deep within the skin to unclog pores. Meanwhile, it promotes a pH level on the skin where bacteria that cause acne have a hard time developing.
